Robert D. Oates, MD, FACS

Robert D. Oates MD FACS currently serves as Professor of Urology at Boston University School of Medicine and Vice-Chairman of the Department of Urology. He directs both the Fellowship and Residency programs for the Boston University Department of Urology and collaborates both nationally and internationally on numerous research projects with many top investigators. He leads a busy clinical practice involving all aspects of male reproductive medicine and surgery and, serving as a recognized expert in all forms of microsurgical reconstruction – including vasectomy reversal.

After graduating from his Urology residency at Boston University, he was fortunate enough to be offered one of the early clinical fellowships in Male Reproductive Medicine and Surgery with Dr. Larry Lipshultz in 1988 at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston. Soon after, he returned to his roots in Boston and has been on the attending staff ever since. He has presented his research at local, national and international meetings on innumerable occasions (symposia, podium, poster, roundtable). In terms of male reproductive surgical research, Dr. Oates authored the first papers on the intentional cryopreservation of epididymal and testis sperm, now a common approach in many IVF centers.

Dr. Oates has been actively involved in clinical and laboratory research on the genetic basis of male reproductive failure, having directed the research leading to the first peer-reviewed manuscript linking Congenital Bilateral Absence of the Vas Deferens and mutations in the Cystic Fibrosis genes. He authored the definitive publication on the clinical aspects of the Y chromosomal AZFc microdeletion, not uncommonly the genetic basis of severe male reproductive failure. I have been the Program Chair for many societal meetings, including the American Society of Reproductive Medicine (ASRM) Annual Meeting in 2012.
