Urinary Tract Infection in Decatur, Georgia (GA)

Your urologist will treat your urinary tract infection (UTI) according to the severity of your symptoms. Antibiotics are the primary course of treatment for UTI and are taken over the course of 3 to 14 days. There are several types of antibiotics available.

Antibiotics for Urinary Tract Infections

Trimethoprim is one of the most commonly prescribed antibiotics for UTI. As one of the strongest antibiotics, it is generally taken over the course of 3 days. Otherwise-healthy adults tolerate this medication well with few side effects.

Nitrofurantoin is the next most commonly given antibiotic for UTI. It is generally taken over the course of 7 days and is counter-indicated for patients with kidney disease.

Cephalosporin is often given for upper urinary tract infections which begin in the ureters or kidneys, and is usually prescribed over the course of seven to 10 days.

Penicillin or amoxicillin is usually selected as a last choice because of the possibility of penicillin-resistance bacteria. As such, penicillin is effective only about 50% of the time. Nevertheless penicillin may be prescribed if other antibiotics have been ineffective.

Treatment for Recurrent UTI

For recurrent UTIs your doctor may recommend further testing to determine the cause. Your doctor may recommend stronger doses of antibiotics or a longer course of treatment.

If your symptoms are particularly distressing, your doctor may give you phenazopyridine (Pyridium) in addition to an antibiotic. Pyridium helps ease the discomfort. It is to be taken only up to two days, and may turn your urine temporarily orange.

Speak to your doctor to determine what course of treatment is right for you.
